  • Ralf Rangnick appointed Manchester United interim manager

Ralf Rangnick appointed Manchester United interim manager

Manchester United bosses on Monday announced the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as their Interim Manager until the end of the season.

The former RB Leipzig coach takes over from the first-team coach Michael Carrick, who has been in caretaker charge for the two games following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just over a week ago for a temple run of results for the 20-time English champions.

At the end of the season, Rangnick is set to take on a consultancy role at Old Trafford for a further two years.

According to the United Football Director, John Murtough, Rangnick was their number one candidate for Interim Manager, reflecting the invaluable leadership and technical skills he will bring from almost four decades of experience in management and coaching.

Rangnick in his acceptance speech said he is excited to join United and focused on making it a successful season for the struggling club.

“The squad is full of talent and has a great balance of youth and experience. All my efforts for the next six months will be on helping these players fulfill their potential, both individually and most importantly, as team,” he said.

“Beyond that, I look forward to supporting the club’s long-term goals on a consultancy basis.” He added.

Manchester United are the eighth in the Premier League table after a 1-1 draw with Chelsea leading on Sunday, 5 points off the top 4.

Solskjaer was last week sacked by the club bosses after a defeating 4-1 against Watford and humiliating home losses to rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

Solskjaer has been the club manager for nearly three years and under his leadership, United finished fourth in the premier league back-to-back seasons for the first time since Alex Ferguson retired as the club boss in 2013.

  • It’s ‘El Clasico’ Time Again!

    It’s ‘El Clasico’ Time Again!

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to a classic La Liga rivalry, as Barcelona host Real Madrid at Camp Nou on the afternoon of Sunday 24 October 2021.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

SuperSport is also the only place to get English commentary on the legendary La Liga, where ‘El Clasico’, the most famous rivalry in all of club football, takes centre stage as Barcelona take on hated rivals Real Madrid.

While the Blaugrana have endured a difficult start to the season both domestically and in Europe, Los Blancos have also flattered to deceive at times, though they have shown some encouraging signs of promise under Carlo Ancelotti.

However, the Italian is wary of his team’s “wrong attitude”, which sprung up in defeats to Sherriff and Espanyol just prior to the international break, and he will be determined to ensure that no such shortcomings are on show for the Clasico.

Barca, meanwhile, desperately need a big victory to boost morale and belief, with the Blaugrana already looking in danger of becoming an ‘also ran’ in La Liga this season. “It is a complicated situation. We’re suffering, I have to be honest about that,” said veteran defender Gerard Pique. “These are difficult times, we have not experienced them before. The atmosphere in the dressing room is very good and we want to turn it around.”

    Key players

Memphis Depay – The Dutch attacker has looked at home in a Barcelona shirt and has taken on the mantle of being a talisman in attack. Depay’s movement, touch and intelligence will be crucial if the Blaugrana are to claim a win over Los Blancos.

Luka Modric – The veteran Croatian midfielder continues to be the heartbeat of Real Madrid, with his ability to orchestrate play from anywhere on the field virtually unmatched. Modric will look to pull the strings for another Real Madrid triumph in the Clasico.

    Head-to-head stats

In head-to-head stats, Barcelona and Real Madrid have met in 246 competitive matches, dating back to 1902. Los Blancos have 98 wins compared to 96 for the Blaugrana, while 52 games have been drawn.

Real completed a league ‘double’ over Barca last season, winning 3-1 at the Camp Nou in October 2020 and 2-1 in Madrid in April 2021. Los Blancos have put together a four-match unbeaten streak against their arch rivals.

    Battles to watch

Gerard Pique v Karim Benzema – A classic battle of two veterans who are masters of their craft and represent the ‘old school’ at their current clubs. Pique and Benzema’s clash could well decide which team comes out on top on Sunday afternoon.

Frenkie de Jong v Eduardo Camavinga – De Jong has taken on greater responsibility for Barcelona and looks to be maturing nicely, but he’ll have a tough test against the all-action Camavinga, whose energy, passing and tackling have helped Real dominate the ‘engine room’ in recent matches.

Ansu Fati v Eder Militao – Barca’s African-born forward may not start the match, but he’s sure to appear at some point in their attack, which will be a ‘red alert’ moment for centre-back Eder Militao as he aims to quell Fati’s potent threat.

  • Inter Milan to Host Juventus this Sunday

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to a classic Serie A rivalry, as Internazionale (Inter Milan) host Juventus at the San Siro Stadium on the evening of Sunday 24 October 2021.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

The ‘Derby d’Italia’, or derby of Italy, between Internazionale and Juventus, is a meeting of two of Italy’s traditional powerhouse clubs and also the last two Serie A title winners, with the Nerazzurri having dethroned the Bianconeri last term.

For the big clash at the San Siro, Juve manager Massimiliano Allegri is hoping to see his side improve a particular aspect of their play after recovering from their poor start to the 2021-22 season: “We need to improve the dribble. At the beginning we lost too many balls on the diagonals where the centre forward had to be the director of the team,” explained the veteran tactician. “When you play with a team to man, the more you move the more you take away from him.”

Inter boss Simone Inzaghi, meanwhile, has called on his team to be at their peak to meet the challenge offered by Juventus: “It will not be a simple game. They play very good football and have excellent individual quality. We will need the best Inter to get a result,” said Inzaghi, who added: “We are in a good place, but we can still improve.”

    Key players

Lautaro Martinez – The Argentine striker has become Inter’s main man in attack after the departure of Romelu Lukaku, and he has stepped up to the challenge in impressive style. Martinez’s aggression and directness will set the tone for the Nerazzurri’s play.

Federico Chiesa – Juve’s star winger/attacking midfielder has the verve and charisma to become a generation-defining player in the black and white, but if he is to begin a great legacy then he must lead the Turin club to victories in major games such as this one.

    Head-to-head stats

In head-to-head stats, Inter and Juve have met in 241 official matches since 1909. The Bianconeri have 110 wins compared to 72 for the Nerazzurri, while 59 games have been drawn.

The teams met four times last season, with Inter winning the first Serie A clash 2-0 at home, before Juve secured a 2-1 aggregate win across two legs of a Coppa Italia tie, and then claimed a 3-2 home triumph in the second league clash, played in May of this year.

    Battles to watch

Simone Inzaghi v Massimiliano Allegri – Inzaghi v Allegri has something of the ‘apprentice v master’ about it, but Inter’s boss will be hoping to outsmart his highly regarded counterpart and guide his team to a key home victory.

Edin Dzeko v Giorgio Chiellini – Dzeko has done a great job in filling the boots of Lukaku and providing an attacking focal point, but he’ll come up against a canny and cynical opponent in Chiellini, who will look to delve into the ‘dark arts’ of defending.

Nicolo Barella v Manuel Locatelli – Two of Italy’s best and brightest midfielders will battle for control of the ‘engine room’, with the player coming out on top set to hand his team a path to dominance in this heavyweight clash.

Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa: African Football Player to Watch

Viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to seeing one of Africa’s top footballers, Cameroon midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, in crucial Serie A action on Sunday 24 October 2021.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

Zambo Anguissa is a newcomer to Serie A, having joined Napoli on loan from Fulham at the start of the 2021-22 season. The 25-year-old has also played for Stade de Reims, Olympique Marseille and Villarreal in his European club career.

He has quickly established himself as a regular under manager Luciano Spalletti, and while the Neapolitans have an option to purchase the player outright at the end of the loan contract in June of next year, the Indomitable Lions midfielder insists he is not thinking that far ahead.

“I immediately realised that Naples would be the right choice for me because I immediately felt everyone’s trust, when the proposal arrived, I did not think twice to accept,” he explained of his move to Naples.

“At this moment, I don’t think about the contract. I’m interested in playing: time will tell if I deserve to move here permanently. I am very happy to be here in Naples. We will see what happens, but now I think of the field and give my best every time I play.”

Zambo Anguissa’s teammate, Napoli goalkeeper David Ospina, says the Cameroonian is exactly the kind of player they needed to bring to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to boost the squad and their hopes of challenging for top honours.

“He’s a very strong player, he can help us a lot,” Ospina explained of Zambo Anguissa. “We absolutely needed him, he has the right maturity and experience. He raised our level to achieve the targets we want.”

The Cameroonian joins fellow Africans Kalidou Koulibaly (Senegal) and Victor Osimhen (Nigeria) in forming the outfield ‘spine’ of this Napoli team, and all three will be looking to continue the fine form they have shown so far this season when they come up against Jose Mourinho and his Roma side.

The Giallorossi v Neapolitan clash can be seen from the Stadio Olimpico in ‘The Eternal City’ LIVE on SuperSport Football and SuperSport GOtv Select 1 on the evening of Sunday 24 October.

  • CAF Calls for Objectivity in Discussion to Hold World Cup Every Two Years

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has called for objectivity to drive the discussion around proposals to have the FIFA World Cup played every two years instead of the current four years.

CAF, which has been participating in discussions related to the matter, released a statement on Tuesday saying it remains committed to the development, growth and success of football in the continent and across the world.

“CAF is of the view that at this stage, what is most important, is for the discussions and deliberations to continue taking place, in an open-minded manner and with the objective of doing what is in the best interest of all Member Associations, the Confederations, football players and other stakeholders worldwide,” the statement said.

“We believe that the long-term growth and success of FIFA, the Member Associations and all Confederations are inextricably intertwined.” The statement reads further.

CAF said it was optimistic that a solution would be found in the best interest of the sport and stakeholders across all regions.

FIFA is currently undertaking a feasibility study into the value of staging the global tournament every two years following a proposal by Saudi Arabia’s football association in May.

There are a number of reasons why there is a plan to host the World Cup every two years. One of them is ensuring a fixed, annual spot in the football calendar for the international game to dominate the agenda.

There is also an opinion within the world governing body that hosting the World Cup after every four years is an obsolete model while holding the tournament every two years would afford more countries a chance to host it.

However, there has been very strong opposition to the proposal, particularly from UEFA, which views it as an attempt to limit Europe’s influence within the world game.

CAF, on the other hand, issued a statement in July supporting the staging of the World Cup every two years even as it pushed ahead with plans for a continental Super League.

There are, however, fears that holding a World Cup after every two years, in addition to the Africa Cup of Nations, which is also held every two years, would lead to fixture congestion.

One solution proposed to address this is to combine qualifying for the two tournaments as was the situation for the 2006 and 2010 competitions.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe in March said the Africa Cup of Nations will continue to be held every two years, despite calls from FIFA that it be changed to four years, as “CAF badly needed the revenue”.

  • Yves Bissouma: Star African Football Player to Watch

Viewers on DStv can look forward to seeing one of Africa’s top footballers, Malian midfielder Yves Bissouma, in Premier League action on Saturday 11 September 2021.

DStv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

The 2021-22 Premier League season is still in its infancy, but already Brighton & Hove Albion have made waves with their positive start. A key driving force behind the Seagulls is Malian Bissouma, who has been in superb form in midfield.

So much so, in fact, that it’s a wonder that none of the league’s heavyweights signed him late in the recently-closed transfer window. The 25-year-old’s dynamism, energy and ability to both create and destroy in the middle of the park would be a powerful addition to any of the title hopefuls.

Former Manchester United star Paul Parker, for example, believes the Red Devils would be majorly improved by bringing Bissouma in from Brighton: “I think Yves Bissouma would be perfect [for United],” he explained.

“Get somebody who knows the Premier League, has played really well since he’s been in the Premier League, plays well in big games for his club when they have them coming up and Bissouma comes to mind.

“He’s been doing it week in, week out. He knows the Premier League. He is athletic, good with the ball at his feet and he doesn’t seem to want to typecast himself as a defensive midfield player. He’s willing to go forward as well and become an attacking midfield player. He’s a midfield player from a previous generation when midfield players were called box-to-box. For example Bryan Robson, Roy Keane and Paul Ince.”

Brighton manager Graham Potter, meanwhile, insists that his player is happy at the South Coast club: “It’s good, if you’re getting that talk then he’s doing something well, we’re doing something well,” said the Seagulls’ boss.

“He’s enjoying his football, he showed his qualities in the opening games – I thought he was fantastic. You can’t control what people say from the outside, it’s talk, but he’s happy with us and we will keep working with him.”

Bissouma will look to continue his great form and win even more admirers when Brighton head to London for a clash with newcomers Brentford on the afternoon of Saturday 11 September, a match you can see LIVE on SuperSport.

  • UEFA Europa League preview, 15-16 September 2021

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to Matchday 1 action from the UEFA Europa League, with matches scheduled to run on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 September 2021.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

The group stage already got underway on Monday 6 September with Galatasaray v Lazio and Lokomotiv Moscow v Olympique Marseille (due to scheduling constraints), while Wednesday 15 September sees Spartak Moscow host Legia Warsaw.

Thursday 16 September is then a busy evening across Europe, with 13 matches being played. The pick is definitely the meeting of Leicester City and Napoli at the King Power Stadium for their Group C opener.

“The English teams are very difficult, but we will embrace the challenge,” said Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti. “We have made progress so far this season and our performances in the Europa League will be a further measuring stick.”

West Ham United and their fans will be thrilled to be returning to European competition, with manager David Moyes looking forward to the experience – which will start with a trip to Croatia to face Dinamo Zagreb.

“We’re really excited. We watched the draw, and watching the teams come out of the pots the biggest thrill was seeing West Ham in one of the pots, back in Europe and getting supporters back at the games hopefully as well,” said Moyes.

“Hopefully we can get them to the away games as well as being at London Stadium, and for us it’s a great opportunity. The players earned it with their performances last year – they played so well throughout the season and, rightly so, they’ve merited a place in European competition.”

The meeting of PSV Eindhoven and Real Sociedad is another key clash, as is the visit of Scottish giants Celtic to Seville to face Real Betis: “Looking at the calibre of the teams we’re going to be up against, I’m super excited,” said Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou.

“We obviously missed out on the Champions League this year, but you see the calibre of the teams in all of the groups in the Europa League – there’s some fantastic opponents, pedigree, tradition and history. We’re going to be up against it and I’m sure all of the players and everyone at the club is looking forward to it.”

Celtic’s arch rivals Rangers will be at home to Olympique Lyon, Monaco face Austria’s Sturm Graz, and Portugal’s Sporting Braga will chase an away win at Serbia’s Red Star, also known as Crvena Zvezda.

  • UEFA Champions League preview, 14-15 September 2021

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to Matchday 1 action from the UEFA Champions League, with matches scheduled to run from Tuesday 14 to Wednesday 15 September 2021.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

The 2021-22 UCL group stage will get underway amid much fanfare – and the return of fans in either full or limited capacity at most venues – on the midweek of 14-15 September. Tuesday’s action opens with two early games, as Swiss side Young Boys play host to Manchester United (and the returning Cristiano Ronaldo!), while Sevilla and Salzburg clash in Spain.

Yet the pick of Tuesday’s games is definitely the night clash of Barcelona and Bayern Munich in Group E, with the Catalan giants looking for revenge for the 8-2 defeat they suffered at the hands of the Bavarians when the teams last met in September 2020.

Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann insists he is not worried by the challenge that awaits his team in the group phase: “The teams are all very nice. Barcelona is top, then Benfica and Dynamo Kiev. All three are very good teams and opponents. These are beautiful destinations, which is always important. Great stadiums. I really am looking forward to it.”

Tuesday also features reigning champions Chelsea beginning the defence of their title at home to Russia’s Zenit Saint Petersburg, as well as an intriguing clash between ‘The Yellow Submarine’ of Villarreal and ‘The Goddess’ of Atalanta.

Wednesday features some genuine heavyweight bouts, particularly the meeting of Liverpool and Milan at Anfield. The Reds and the Rossoneri have a combined 13 UCL titles between them and famously met in two finals in 2004-05 (won by Liverpool) and 2006-07 (won by Milan).

“We played, I don’t know how often, already against Porto, so they will be waiting for us. We have obviously a little bit of [an] open bill with Atletico, and AC Milan, a historical one obviously,” said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp. “So, I think our supporters should be looking forward to it – we do, for sure!”

Another meeting of the behemoths sees Internazionale host Real Madrid at the San Siro, with the Italian champions hoping to get off to a fast start in Group D.

“The Champions League for us is a very prestigious competition,” said Inter legend and club vice president Javier Zanetti. “We will face Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk again like last year, then there is Sheriff who play for the first time in the Champions League, and we will approach every match with great humility.”

Uganda Silverbacks lose to Cape Verde in FIBA AfroBasket

The Uganda Silverbacks’ journey at the FIBA AfroBasket championship ended last night after losing 79-71 to Cape Verde in the quarter finals at the Kigali Arena, Rwanda.

Cape Verde proved to be a strong team all night long as they posted a 24-20 lead in the first quarter finals.

The Uganda Silverbacks attempted to make a comeback in the second quarter but Cape Verde still managed to lead with 19-15 making it an overall of 43-35 at half time.

In the third quarter, Cape Verde proved to lead in 18- 16 to claim an impressive 10-point lead heading into the last quarter with an overall 61-51 lead.

Uganda’s attempts to fight hard to lead proved futile as cape Verde won the match with 79-71 lead.

Cape Verde now moves to the semi-finals to face Tunisia along side Senegal and Ivory Coast which will also play in the same semi-finals.

The Ugandan Silverbacks in their third appearance at the championship have left a strong mark at the tournament after surpassing their expectations in Kigali.

  • Investing in Africa’s youth is crucial for sustainable development – Coca-Cola CEO

Investing in Africa’s youth is crucial for sustainable development – Coca-Cola CEO

This International Youth Day, Africa needs to think about how it can embrace its large youth population for the benefit of the continent, says Jacques Vermeulen, Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) CEO.

Africa is often spoken of as being blessed by a ‘demographic dividend’ in the form of its overwhelmingly youthful population, but the question of whether the continent will succeed in reaping the potential economic benefits of this hangs in the balance after the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The fact that youth make up a large and growing proportion of the overall population of Africa means that the ratio of those who are potentially economically active, compared to those who are not, favours strong economic growth for decades to come.

But this depends on the continent’s ability to generate employment for the young fast enough to accommodate large numbers of new entrants to the labour market.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 has set back Africa’s progress on many fronts.

According to the latest International Monetary Fund outlook for Sub-Saharan Africa, employment fell by about 8.5 percent in 2020, more than 32 million people were thrown into extreme poverty, and disruptions to education have jeopardised the prospects of a generation of schoolchildren.

African students missed 67 days of instruction due to school closures, more than four times the level in advanced economies.

Catching up on this learning, and developing skills for the labour market, will be one of the great challenges of the continent’s recovery path.

Skills development will increasingly have to be modular, to allow the young to bridge learning gaps, and it will increasingly have to transcend the classroom setting through digital offerings.

A great example of this is CCBA’s own Learning Centre, which is an online tool for all employees to use for self-directed learning and career development, and an investment in our employees’ personal growth. There are more than 120 courses which are relevant to our business and which help our team keep pace with the changing world of work – all they need to do is log in and learn.

Solutions like this can make a critical contribution to upskilling African youth and overcoming the learning deficit brought about by COVID-19.

Our focus on developing young talent in our business extends further; we offer training programmes for graduates as well as management training for young people who have gained some experience already.

Because youth are integral to our continent’s shared success, we seek to empower them by enabling their economic inclusion through internal training and community programmes throughout our markets on the continent.

    Entrepreneurship is the key

Coca-Cola’s youth empowerment programmes are targeted at current or potential entrepreneurs with the possibility to link to the Coca-Cola value chain today or in the future.

In order to help grow the livelihoods of youth, enabling activities in our programmes include business skills training, access to finance, assets and mentoring. We focus on assisting with skills development, particularly for graduates who may require additional training in soft skills that would make them more employable, or which would aid their entrepreneurial endeavours.

CCBA directly empowers thousands of young people every year through various programmes across our markets, enabling their inclusion in the economy.

In Uganda, we partnered with Boundless Minds to create the Elevate! online youth mentorship programme to support qualified but unemployed youth with school-to-work transitions. The programme has already attracted more than 1 600 young people.

    Creating a better future

At CCBA, we will continue using our focus to help youth become architects of their own success, resulting in increased economic value and business capability for not only themselves, but for their communities and our business system.

We realise that through investing in growing the communities in which we operate, we are investing in building our own business.

CCBA’s efforts will remain focused on ensuring that young people run successful enterprises, increasing their participation in the formal economy through education and initiating programmes to prepare them for the world of work – all in partnership with like-minded stakeholders.

Ensuring that Africa’s youth achieve their full potential, and that we unlock the ’demographic dividend’ that makes this continent such an exciting prospect for the future, is not the responsibility of governments alone.

Businesses like ours have a lot to contribute, and by doing so we can help to create a better, more prosperous future for all.
